I'm going to list some usefull resources we came upon during Paula's presentation on FLOSS:

  • if you're looking for a list of different linux distributions, go to http://distrowatch.com/
  • for a GNU/linux distribution developed to fulfill needs of small non-profit organisation, go here. NGO geeks is a portal providing info on FLOSS for NGOs.
  • using LiveCD, you can build your own customized live linux distribution
  • i-hacked has a list of usefull linux commands
  • you can find lot of command line tips and tricks here

Crypto workshop

Description: with the uprise of society of control, everyday examples of vanishing civil rights and recent events of the police abuse of the activists' privacy, it became obvious that strong encryption tools are required to protect freedom of speech.

Duration: 1 hour
Max number of partecipants: 2 persons per computer

Linux server administration workshop

i'm proposing a workshop on running linux as a server.
partecipants should have basic knowledge on linux and networking. ability of using some of standard unix editors (vi/emacs/nano)is mandatory.

duration: 90 minutes
max number of partecipants: 1-2 per every computer available
i will use debian, GNU/linux distribution used my most servers
video beam would be of great help.

topics would include:

  • installing software from packages
  • compiling from source
  • setting up services:
  • starting services automatically: init, inet and xinetd
  • setting up dns server
  • setting up web server
  • setting up mail server
  • ?running samba?
  • daily administration tasks
