Ivana from Croatia is giving a workshop on how to install Linux on a Mac. Twelve women are joining, and now listening to how to partition their harddiscs. Ivana recommends using Ipartition.
thanks for all of this info; i confess i haven't even tried to do anything yet, haven't had time ... also i don't actually have a linux CD, it was done in a workshop. one day ... maybe at /etc 2006 ...
* Backup all your data
* Defragment the harddrive (both windows and maxos x need this)
* On a Mac you can use the proprietory iFragment
* Resize the main partition, ie make it smaller, and make one or two new partions in the remaining space
* On a Mac you can use the proprietory iPartition, which must be run from a Live CD
* see http://www.charlessoft.com/ for BootCD
* windows has an integrated defrag utility
* have you backup'ed your data?
* windows or macos x must first be installed or still be present before installing linux
* only after you've done all of the above should you start installing linux
* have fun!
i installed linux on my mac a couple of weeks ago, on a separate partition. & i had yaboot to do the dual boot. then, i restarted from OSX in OS9 (to use a particular application) & when i went back to OSX, i found that yaboot no longer launches on start up.
actually i had major help to do all of this, help that is overseas at the moment at debconf, & i have no idea how to resurrect yaboot.
insert ubuntu cd, restart computer and press 'c' to boot from a cd. insert 'expert' on boot manu, scroll down and select 'install yaboot on a hard disk'. this should re-write master boot with yaboot, even if i don't have idea why os9 deleted it.
another way of doing it is totally re install the oS system and partitian it from there during the reinstallation from the discimage. This way I didn't use any partitian software that way only was given the option during the install. I was assisted however and will ask for specific details if I am totally correct... more soon
still haven't fixed it ...
