Why we use email

less than 1 minute read

Using mainly email.

People may wonder why we don’t make use of Facebook. We have chosen to use an email account and a mailing lists as our primary ways of communicating with each other and with the “outside world”. The reason for this is because it is the most decentralised and independent way of communicating. We have our own domain (eclectictechcarnival.org), the website is located in the premises of a project we trust and managed by our tech collective, systerserver.net, and the DNS is managed by someone we know. This person has been doing this for us, for a very small fee since we began in 2001. Our mailing list is also hosted on this person’s server in The Netherlands.

When using email, one can choose to use encryption, to make communication even more private and secure. Have a look at this guide if you want to know more on how to encrypt emails.

If we decide to use a social media platform we will choose something non-commercial and federated.

And if people spread the word about the event through their own favourite channel, app or platform, that is fine of course.
